It's offically winter in Duluth.

We just had our first snowfall of the year in Duluth (well, more of a dusting)! Snow is snow and I had to make a snowman!

I thought it would be fun to save this fellow for later.

Unfortunately, snowmen don't keep well in the freezer.

chickadees and cattails

Sophie and I are planning to hand feed chickadees this winter. The chickadee is quite brave despite its size. Our plan is to make life size mannequins of ourselves that will feed the birds near our feeders, this should eventually allow us to feed them by hand. I will make a "how to" post when that project starts.

I fed some chickadees by hand last winter while on vacation (see the photo).
On this particular day we waited patiently while the birds stopped by our feeders.

We also went to the beaver pond by our house to play with cattails. As a young boy I used to spend lots of time in a wetland playing in the tall grass and spreading the cattail seeds. Sophie seemed to enjoy herself.

Fairy Adventure

A few weekends ago Sophie suggested we build fairy houses at Hartley nature center. It was a difficult trek to find fairy land, but we made it with only a couple bruises. The fairies should have a comfortable winter in their new houses.

Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe – The Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe is a creative group of people spreading the art of outdoor parade spectacle including stilt walking, paper mache sculpture and costuming for parades. Hannah and I have recently joined the Magic Smelt Puppet Troupe. We will be involved with making costumes and learning to stilt walk for upcoming events. These are four foot stilts making me 10 feet tall.
